With the passing of X-Games champion and fellow Canadian Sarah Burke yesterday the freeskiing world lost an icon. She is considered by many to be the first competitive female freeskier, and successfully lobbied the X-Games to include women in freeskiing events on equal standing and equal prize purses. It is also thanks to her that the 2014 Winter Olympics will include freestyle skiing. The skiing community (and Canada) was always hopeful that she would take gold in 2014 at Sochi, but now it is clear that her legacy will stand as something much more important, being an enabler of dreams and trailblazer for other freeskiers and women to compete and do what they love. Sarah died from complications resulting from a crash in the superpipe, and despite the tragic circumstances she will be remembered as a legend who died doing what she loved.
